{"id":36454,"date":"2024-03-20T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.phillips66.com\/?p=36454"},"modified":"2024-03-20T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T20:30:00","slug":"2024-airquest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.phillips66.com\/newsroom\/2024-airquest\/","title":{"rendered":"Crafting a Culture of Trust Propels AirQuest Aviation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>BUTLER, Pennsylvania<\/strong> \u2013 When an airport\u2019s legacy includes installing long-distance fuel tanks on a single-engine aircraft destined to make a record-breaking flight, the bar is set high when it comes to maintenance standards.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image align wp-block-psx-widen-image\">\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/phillips66.widen.net\/content\/hv9iqko1ns\/jpeg\/AirQuest_Thumbnail_872x537.jpeg?keep=c&#038;crop=yes&#038;color=ffffffff&#038;quality=100&#038;u=keuiiu&#038;retina=true\" width=\"872\" height=\"537\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s a benchmark the technicians embrace at AirQuest Aviation, the fixed-base operator (FBO) for Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport (KBTP). That\u2019s the airport where Amelia Earhart acquired those long-distance fuel tanks \u2013 and received instrument training \u2013 for her red Lockheed Vega before becoming the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart\u2019s arduous, 15-hour flight breached the limits of both plane and pilot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of trust is involved in aviation,\u201d says Matt Steele,&nbsp;general manager&nbsp;for AirQuest Aviation. \u201cWe focus on doing everything with the utmost integrity to build that customer trust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the AQ in AirQuest stands for \u201cAbsolute Quality,\u201d a slogan enshrined on business cards and embedded, Steele says, in the culture of this Phillips 66<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;branded FBO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur slogan reminds us to take pride in our work because aviation, especially, is about quality and safety,\u201d explains Steele. \u201cWe put a lot of effort into these focal points, and they\u2019re always present in our decision making. We want our customers to have a great experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Quest for Maintenance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, AirQuest Aviation is crafting a reputation not only as a&nbsp;stress-free commute option to \u201cSteel City\u201d but also as a preferred aircraft repair station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full-service FBO features distinctive services \u2013 like stunning scenic flights over a Pittsburgh skyline framed dramatically between the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers merging into&nbsp;the mighty Ohio River. But maintenance is the FBO\u2019s bread and butter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur maintenance work has grown so much. It\u2019s tripled in the past 10 years,\u201d Steele says. \u201cWhat we\u2019re doing is quite phenomenal. And it\u2019s all private aviation. We restructured and redesigned our maintenance department over the last decade, and it really is nice to see that all come together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With factory-trained technicians for King Air, Cirrus, Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft and Diamond aircraft, AirQuest Aviation\u2019s 15 mechanics tackle everything from engine installs, sheet metal repairs, major and annual inspections, full interiors and avionics to aircraft recovery, prop balancing and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll the Cirrus owners in the region have gradually seen our quality output,\u201d Steele explains. \u201cWe do all the work for the Civil Air Patrol in our area because they\u2019ve come to appreciate our quality maintenance output. A lot of jets fly into our facility because of the quality reputation that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It speaks volumes about an FBO\u2019s culture when a lifetime of wrench-turning leads to a promotion to general manager.&nbsp;Before managing&nbsp;AirQuest,&nbsp;Steele&nbsp;spent 20 years as a mechanic, the last 11 of those running the FBO\u2019s maintenance department<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe other day I was telling Nathan Courtney, our maintenance manager, that I haven\u2019t turned a wrench in almost a year,\u201d says Steele. \u201cIt\u2019s quite a change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Embracing his general manager role with a leadership mindset \u2013 one molded during military service and high school as captain for the basketball and soccer teams \u2013 Steele is quick to credit others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just have a phenomenal staff,\u201d he says. \u201cFrom FBO services to the Part 61 flight school, maintenance and charter operation \u2013 everyone is top notch. That definitely makes the biggest difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second AirQuest location 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh serves historic Beaver County \u2013 once known for bountiful supplies of limestone and&nbsp;bituminous coal. The AirQuest FBO at Beaver County Airport (KBVI) has built a reputation in the region for maintaining higher-end, single-engine planes made by Diamond Aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Experiences = Appreciation&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scenic flights are something AirQuest started a few years ago. \u201cNo one else was doing it in the area, so we thought, \u2018Why not?\u2019\u201d explains Steele. \u201cThe more people understand aviation, and the more people experience aviation, the more they can appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AirQuest has donated scenic flights to get military veterans, people with&nbsp;special needs, and&nbsp;even some nursing home residents airborne. \u201cWe\u2019ve taken elderly people that used to be pilots,\u201d Steele explains. \u201cIt\u2019s an activity they didn\u2019t think was available to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, says Steele, they want the community to enjoy aviation. That same philosophy fuels the FBO\u2019s flight school. \u201cWe have a really personal approach to flight training,\u201d Steele says. \u201cWe pride ourselves on having good quality airplanes to train out of. We\u2019re more about the aviation experience than just the end goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, AirQuest switched fuel suppliers to join the Phillips 66 Aviation network. \u201cThe reps are local. You\u2019re not calling someone a state away to help with a problem,\u201d explains Steele. \u201cThe added community element really helps, along with confidence in the product and supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, Steele says, it\u2019s all about creating a culture that embraces integrity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s hard to advertise in aviation,\u201d Steele concludes. \u201cWord of mouth may be the best marketing for an FBO.
